Addis Ababa, September 11, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew has announced that the new Bishoftu International Airport is slated for completion within the next five years, with international flight operations expected to commence by 2030.
Mesfin described the completion of Bishoftu International Airport as a transformative milestone for Ethiopia’s aviation sector, marking a significant step forward in expanding the country’s global connectivity.
Earlier, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had identified the construction of Bishoftu International Airport as one of the new mega-projects to be launched in the Ethiopian New Year.
In a New Year message, Mesfin extended his warmest wishes for a year of prosperity, joy, and well-being to all Ethiopians, as well as to Ethiopian Airlines’ customers and employees.
He underscored that Ethiopian Airlines, as a national institution, demands consistent dedication and hard work. Mesfin attributed the airline’s resilience and achievements to the steadfast support of the government, the strategic leadership of the airline’s management and board, and the tireless efforts of its staff.
Highlighting the airline’s accomplishments over the past year, he noted the successful launch of new flight routes and the expansion of airport infrastructure, reflecting Ethiopian Airlines’ enduring growth and global stature.
Preparations for the Bishoftu International Airport are already underway, with construction scheduled to begin in the 2018 fiscal year. The CEO reported that relocation of farmers from the project site is in progress and that new housing for affected communities is nearing completion. Ethiopian Airlines is currently securing financing for the airport’s construction.
Once completed, Bishoftu Airport will feature a state-of-the-art terminal, positioning it among the world’s leading airports and reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines’ reputation as a global aviation leader.
Looking ahead, Mesfin revealed that the airline’s strategic roadmap, formerly “Vision 2035,” has been revised and will be relaunched as “Vision 2040.” The new plan is expected to be unveiled soon.
He added that steps are already being taken to enhance customer service, including modernization of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to provide international-standard services for domestic flights, ENA reported. In addition, Ethiopian Airlines plans to launch new routes in the coming year to ensure convenient and efficient travel options for passengers.
