Ethiopian Cities Undergo Major Transformation as Government Prioritizes Green, Livable Urban Dev’t – Minister
Addis Ababa, November 16, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s cities are entering a new phase of rapid transformation and revitalization as the government intensifies efforts to make urban centers greener, more livable, and economically competitive, Minister of Urban Development and Infrastructure Chaltu Sani said.

The remarks were delivered at the conclusion of the second day of the 10th Ethiopian Cities Forum, which is underway in Semera Logia, Afar region, under the theme “Urban Growth for Ethiopian Excellence.”
According to the Minister, 143 cities are participating in this year’s forum, which has also attracted 7,000 exhibitors** from across the country. She noted that the platform is facilitating key policy dialogue on urban competitiveness, service delivery, and structural challenges facing the sector.
Chaltu recalled that cities were once widely associated with poverty and underdevelopment. However, she said, government-led reforms and strategic investment have repositioned them as engines of prosperity, innovation, and improved public services.
She highlighted the corridor development initiative—first launched in Addis Ababa—as a flagship achievement, demonstrating rapid and high-quality urban modernization. The program has now expanded to 73 cities, reflecting what she described as a “clear commitment to building modern, citizen-friendly urban centers.”
The Minister noted that corridor development has revived industrial activity, stimulated job creation**, expanded municipal revenue, and improved service delivery, while also contributing to positive changes in workplace culture and productivity.
Chaltu further stated that historical failures in urban planning implementation had contributed to recurring problems, but emphasized that recent governance reforms have enabled effective enforcement of urban planning standards.
She concluded by reaffirming the government’s priority to ensure cities evolve into green, resilient, and comfortable living spaces, stressing that “Ethiopia’s cities are undergoing a remarkable revival.”
