Ethiopian Government Mourns Victims of Deadly Gamo Zone Landslide, Mobilizes Relief Efforts

Addis Ababa, March 12, 2026 (FMC) — The FDRE Government Communication Service (GCS) has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and the displacement of citizens following a landslide that struck four districts of Gamo Zone in the South Ethiopia Region.

The disaster, which occurred on March 10, 2026, resulted in the tragic loss of lives and the significant displacement of residents, according to official reports.

Authorities have confirmed that 70 citizens have died.

In a statement issued today, the Government Communication Service extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and friends of the victims, as well as to the people of Gamo Zone and the wider population of the South Ethiopia Region.

Demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting affected communities, high-ranking federal and regional officials are currently on the ground overseeing emergency response operations and providing comfort to those impacted by the disaster.

The statement indicated that the regional administration, working in close coordination with the Disaster Risk Management Commission, has launched an extensive relief mobilization effort.

These efforts are focused on the immediate provision of essential supplies, including food and basic commodities, to residents who have been displaced from their homes.

Beyond the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance, the government has also underscored its commitment to ensuring the long-term recovery and well-being of survivors.

Particular emphasis has been placed on rehabilitating victims and restoring their livelihoods to normal conditions.

Authorities are also taking precautionary measures to prevent further loss of life or property by identifying high-risk areas susceptible to similar incidents. In a coordinated effort, residents living in zones vulnerable to landslides are being relocated to safer and more secure environments.

Given the ongoing rainy season and the heightened risk of similar natural hazards, the government has called on citizens—especially those residing in highland and erosion-prone areas—to remain vigilant.

The public has been urged to strictly follow safety directives and precautionary guidelines issued by relevant government institutions in order to mitigate potential risks.

The Government of Ethiopia has reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to work closely with regional authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the full recovery of the affected districts.
