Ethiopian Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Adha with Unity and Devotion

Addis Ababa, June 6, 2025 (FMC) — Muslim communities across Ethiopia are joyfully celebrating Eid al-Adha, marking the 1446th observance of one of Islam’s most significant holidays.

Hundreds of thousands of worshippers gathered in the capital, Addis Ababa, and in major cities nationwide to perform prayers and take part in festivities that emphasize unity, compassion, and spiritual reflection.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the profound faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command.

In remembrance of this act, Muslims around the world traditionally slaughter animals after the special Eid prayers, which are held in congregation at mosques or open prayer grounds early in the morning.

This holy occasion also coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage, undertaken by those able to travel to Mecca, further deepening its spiritual significance.

Religious leaders have called on the faithful to celebrate the holiday in a spirit of peace and fraternity, emphasizing the importance of upholding Ethiopia’s longstanding tradition of unity and coexistence.

In addition to communal prayers and the act of sacrifice, the day is marked by sharing meals, giving to the needy, and reinforcing bonds of family and community.
