Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Expresses Condolences Over the Passing of Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s religious institutions have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris, former President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, recognizing him as a unifying figure and a symbol of peace, faith, and service.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church conveyed its condolences, describing the Grand Mufti as a figure of love, unity, and compassion who earned the respect and admiration of all Ethiopians.

The Church extended heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and the people of Ethiopia.

Similarly, Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa, President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, expressed profound grief over the Grand Mufti’s passing. He highlighted Haji Oumer Idris’s lifelong dedication to religious knowledge, spiritual service, and efforts to strengthen Muslim unity.

Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa also recalled the Grand Mufti’s pivotal role in establishing the Supreme Council and Islamic banks, noting that his contributions will remain a lasting legacy.

The Supreme Council President prayed for Allah to accept the Grand Mufti’s good deeds and grant him Jannatul Firdous.

He further announced that a national committee will be established to ensure that the funeral ceremony is conducted in an Islamic manner befitting the Grand Mufti’s status, with arrangements communicated to the public.
