Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Drives National Economic Growth

Addis Ababa, August 31, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) has emerged as a key driver of Ethiopia’s economic growth, playing a vital role in the nation’s trade and development, ESL CEO Beriso Amelo said.

Over its six-decade history, ESL has evolved rapidly, keeping pace with global advancements in logistics technology and operational efficiency.

Leveraging a modern, integrated multi-modal transportation system, the company connects domestic markets with more than 340 international ports, ensuring the seamless movement of cargo from around the world to Ethiopia.

“Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics provides comprehensive land and sea services that are crucial to both import and export trade,” Beriso Amelo said.

He highlighted the company’s contribution to major government projects by delivering reliable and high-quality transportation services for essential goods.

Since the national reform, ESL has significantly expanded its operations through structural changes and strategic reforms, broadening its scope and efficiency across the logistics sector.

“Ethiopian ships act as ambassadors for the nation, promoting Ethiopia on the global stage,” Beriso added, pointing to the Ethiopian Maritime Academy’s impressive track record in training skilled professionals to meet industry demands.

The CEO underscored the sector’s substantial impact on key areas of the economy, including agriculture, urban development, manufacturing, and infrastructure, while contributing to overall GDP growth, ENA reported.

He emphasized ESL’s pivotal role in enhancing efficiency, saving time, and optimizing costs, thereby supporting Ethiopia’s broader economic progress.
