Ethiopian speaker engages in global parliamentary dialogue at IPU conference in Geneva

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia is actively participating in the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), being held in Geneva, Switzerland from July 29 to 31, 2025.

The Ethiopian delegation is led by Tagesse Chaffo, Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR).

Held once every five years, the conference brings together parliamentary leaders from across the globe to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation and reinforce multilateralism. This year’s conference centers on the theme: “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All.”

In addition to the general debate, participants are engaging in panel discussions with international organization leaders, academics, civil society representatives, and members of the media to address pressing global challenges.

On the sidelines of the event, Speaker Tagesse met with Katarina Barley, Vice President of the European Parliament.

Ethiopia’s Permanent Mission in Geneva told Fana Media Corporation that the two officials discussed the longstanding parliamentary ties between Ethiopia and the European Union and explored opportunities to deepen future cooperation.
