Ethiopian Statistical Service Embarks on Major Reform to Modernize Structure, Data Systems
Addis Ababa, August 11, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Statistical Service announced that it is entering a new era of progress, driven by a comprehensive reform aimed at modernizing its organizational structure and data production systems.
A capacity building program between Statistics Korea and the Ethiopian Statistical Service, with support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Africa Development Bank (AfDB) is underway in Addis Ababa.
Opening the three-day program today, Ethiopian Statistics Service Director General Beker Shale said the Service is currently undertaking a major reform to modernize its organizational structure and data production system.
“We have been implementing a roadmap for this transformation–the Ethiopian Statistical Development Program, from 2023 to 2026,” he affirmed.
For the Director General, the program is a testament to the Ethiopian government’s recognition of the critical role that accurate, reliable and timely statistics play in national planning, monitoring progress and attracting investment.
“This new chapter brings with it a clear mandate to modernize our statistical infrastructure, enhance our methodologies and improve the accessibility and quality of our statistical data,” he said.
He also pointed out that just last year, ESC successfully conducted the second ever Agricultural Census after 22 years, the fifth round Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey and the National Integrated household survey.
These vital statistics are crucial for government decision making at all levels, he said, adding to realize this ambitious work, significant endeavors are being carried out in internal investment and data production technology, among others.
Stating that collaboration with national and international partners is essential, he commended the Korean National Statistical Office, the UNDP and the AfDB for their continued support.
Chief Agriculture Statistician at the African Development Bank, Vincent Negendakumana said Ethiopia is showcasing how national efforts are yielding in building the capacity of the country to produce the data of the sector.
The Chief Statistician noted that the African Development Bank has been providing support to countries in their capacity building program, reaffirming the commitment of the bank to continue its unwavering support to the sector.
UNDP Economic Advisor Ali Zafar on his part emphasized the significance of statistics and sharing of best experiences especially from Korea on how to make statistics as scientific as possible.
“We want to hear a lot from the Korean experience on how to make statistics as scientific as possible, and to share practices with Ethiopia.”
During the occasion, the Korean delegation reaffirmed its commitment to support Ethiopia’s ongoing endeavors in the transformation and modernization of the sector, including sharing experiences.
