Ethiopians in Addis Ababa celebrate historic GERD success with vibrant sports festivities and national pride

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2025 (POA) – Residents and officials of Addis Ababa celebrated the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) with a vibrant mass sports event at Meskel Square today, marking one of Ethiopia’s most ambitious national achievements.

The square was alive with energy and pride as citizens of all ages took part in various sports activities, joining the nation in honoring the dam’s historic significance.

Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Jantirar Abay, addressed the crowd, highlighting the GERD’s importance not only as a transformative energy project but also as a symbol of national unity and progress. “GERD reflects the collective determination and resilience of the Ethiopian people,” he said.

The dam, Africa’s largest hydropower project, generates over 5,000 megawatts of electricity, significantly boosting the country’s energy capacity and supporting ongoing economic development. Beyond its technical and economic impact, GERD represents a national dream realized through the sacrifices and contributions of ordinary citizens—from farmers selling livestock, teachers donating part of their salaries, to millions purchasing bonds they could barely afford.

“The joy we celebrate today is not just about a dam; it is about the spirit of a people united by a shared vision and determination,” Deputy Mayor Abay added.

GERD was officially inaugurated last Tuesday by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, with the event attended by leaders from the Horn of Africa and the Caribbean, underscoring the project’s regional and international significance.
