Ethiopians Sweep Men’s 10,000m at 2025 Prefontaine Classic.
Addis Ababa, June 28, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian athletes delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 Prefontaine Classic, part of the Diamond League series held in Eugene, Oregon, by securing the top three positions in the men’s 10,000-meter race.
Biniam Mehari took first place with a world-leading time of 26:43.82, narrowly edging out compatriot Berihu Aregawi, who finished second in 26:43.84. Olympic champion Selemon Barega followed closely in third place with 26:44.13, completing an all-Ethiopian podium sweep.
Kenyan athletes filled the next four positions, led by Edwin Kurgat in fourth with 26:46.35, followed by Ishamael Kipkurui, Benson Kiplangat, and Stanley Mburu. Ethiopia’s Sime Mezgebu also finished inside the top ten, placing eighth in 27:04.17.
The result underscores Ethiopia’s enduring dominance in long-distance running, with its athletes once again proving their strength on the global stage against some of the world’s top competitors.
