Ethiopia’s Cement Production Capacity Reaches 20 Million Metric Tons Annually – Minister

Addis Ababa, May 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s annual cement production capacity has reached 20 million metric tons, according to Minister of Mines, Engineer Habtamu Tegegn.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Pioneer Cement Factory expansion project, the minister noted that efforts are underway to further boost cement production by commissioning four coal processing plants to support the sector. He emphasized that robust capacity is being built not only in cement but also in steel and other critical inputs to support the construction industry.

Engineer Habtamu also highlighted that the Pioneer Cement Factory—developed through a short-term expansion partnership between Ethiopian and Chinese investors—has begun producing high-quality cement products.

He added that by enhancing the efficiency of existing factories and operationalizing new ones, Ethiopia is positioning itself to meet both domestic demand and supply needs in neighboring markets.

Dire Dawa Administrative Mayor Kedir Juhar noted that Pioneer Cement is already making a notable impact by creating jobs, boosting the local economy, and operating with environmentally friendly technology.

The factory’s General Manager, Mr. Leon Zone, announced that the facility has created employment opportunities for 550 citizens and has significantly expanded its production capacity.

The expansion project was officially inaugurated today by President Taye Atske-Selassie of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
