Ethiopia’s ePassport set to receive Red Dot Design Award for security and innovation

Addis Ababa, August 7, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s recently introduced electronic passport (e-passport) is set to receive the prestigious Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, in recognition of its strong security features, innovative use of technology, and evocative visual presentation.

Launched by the Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) in February 2025, the e-passport stood out among entries for its integration of high-level encryption and biometric safeguards. Beyond securely storing personal data, the passport features artistic imagery showcasing Ethiopia’s historical, cultural, and natural landmarks—design elements that underscore the nation’s rich heritage and identity.

These thoughtful design choices, combined with enhanced confidentiality measures, contributed to Ethiopia’s e-passport being selected for this year’s Red Dot distinction, ICS told Fana Media Corporation.

“These international honors reflect the reforms we are implementing at the Immigration and Citizenship Service,” said ICS Director-General Ms. Selamawit Dawit. “The Ethiopian e-passport was recognized for its exceptional security features, strong integration of culture, and storytelling. I would like to congratulate all Ethiopians on this prestigious award.”

The Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design is an internationally recognized competition that has celebrated outstanding achievements in communication design since 1993. An independent jury of global experts evaluates entries across multiple categories, with the Red Dot marking excellence in design quality and creativity.
