Flag Day Rekindles Ethiopia’s Spirit of Peace, Unity, and National Renewal — President Taye
Addis Ababa, October 13, 2025 (FMC) – President Taye Atske-Selassie says Flag Day rekindles Ethiopia’s spirit of peace, unity, and renewal, calling on citizens to strengthen their national bond and uphold the values of cooperation, resilience, and optimism.
In his address at the national celebration organized by the House of Peoples’ Representatives, President Taye described the Ethiopian flag as “the emblem of sovereignty and a symbol of our collective dignity and resilience.”
He noted that the annual commemoration serves as a moment for Ethiopians to renew their love for the country, reinforce national unity, and look toward a hopeful and prosperous future.
President Taye reaffirmed Ethiopia’s enduring role as a champion of peace, cooperation, and collective development. “We Ethiopians must ensure peace in our minds, carry the light of optimism in our hearts, and protect our flag and our nation through united efforts,” he said.
He highlighted that this year’s observance holds special significance, coming after the successful completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a landmark achievement heralding a new era of development and national prosperity.
The President also drew attention to Ethiopia’s growing international recognition through initiatives such as the green legacy program and progress in agriculture, industry, and other development sectors, which elevate the pride of the national flag.
Referring to major infrastructure and industrial projects, including fertilizer and natural gas plants, the President noted that these initiatives will sustain the nation’s growth and ensure the continuity of Ethiopia’s development journey. He further reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to securing fair and peaceful access to seaports through regional cooperation and diplomacy based on mutual benefit.
President Taye also expressed gratitude to the National Defense Force, Federal Police, and Regional Security Forces for their steadfast efforts in safeguarding the country’s peace, stability, and sovereignty.
This year’s Flag Day is observed under the theme “Our Flag: A Herald of Prosperity for Ethiopia — Symbol of Unity, Sovereignty, and Renaissance.”
The national ceremony brought together senior government officials, including Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives Tagese Chafo, Speaker of the House of Federation Agegnehu Teshager, Federal Supreme Court President Tewodros Mihret, Deputy Speaker Lomi Bedo, Minister of Defense Engineer Aisha Mohammed, Minister of State for Government Tesfaye Beljige (PhD), as well as members of both Houses, defense officers, and veterans.
Speaker Tagese reaffirmed that National Flag Day continues to be celebrated annually in accordance with the Constitution and Proclamation No. 863/2006 (as amended), which designates the first Monday of October as National Flag Day.
He said this year’s theme captures both the essence of Ethiopia’s current achievements and its vision for a brighter future, describing the flag as “a lasting emblem of perseverance and the unbroken seal of national unity.”
