France’s largest wildfire this summer leaves one dead, several injured
Addis Ababa, August 6, 2025 (FMC) – A fast-moving wildfire in southern France has killed one woman, injured at least nine people, and scorched more than 13,000 hectares in the Corbières hills, making it the country’s largest blaze this summer.
The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon in Ribaute, Aude department, and quickly spread through the dry, wooded landscape—fueled by strong winds and scorching temperatures. At least 25 homes were damaged or destroyed.
Authorities confirmed the death of a 65-year-old woman who refused to evacuate her home. One person remains in critical condition, and several firefighters were among the injured.
Evacuations were carried out in multiple villages and campsites, though officials have not confirmed the total number displaced. Some evacuees spent the night in municipal shelters as roads were closed and aerial firefighting efforts continued.
Firefighters described the situation as “a disaster of unprecedented scale,” with the fire spreading at 5.5 km/h. Local officials warn it could take days to contain the blaze.
President Emmanuel Macron said all national resources are mobilized and urged caution. Prime Minister François Bayrou is expected to visit the area.
Southern Europe has faced widespread fires this summer. Scientists link the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires to climate change, as Europe warms at twice the global average.
