G20 Leaders’ Summit Kicks Off in South Africa

Addis Ababa, November 22, 2025 (FMC) — The 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit opened on Saturday in Johannesburg, South Africa, with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the opening address as delegates gathered for two days of talks.

Held under South Africa’s theme of “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,” the summit is the first-ever G20 meeting hosted on the African continent. Leaders are expected to focus on debt relief for low-income countries, a major barrier to inclusive growth in developing nations.

The agenda also includes climate adaptation, the transition to clean energy, and other key priorities.

Discussions will cover internal cooperation and the bloc’s strategic direction, with a series of bilateral meetings scheduled on the sidelines of the two-day gathering.
