GCS: Ethiopia’s Diversity Powers National Unity and Drives Development

Addis Ababa, December 7, 2025 (FMC) — The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’s Government Communication Service (GCS) has emphasized that the country’s Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day highlights Ethiopia’s diversity as a key driver of national unity, democratic governance, and socio-economic development.

In a statement marking tomorrow’s 20th celebration of the occasion, the GCS explained that Ethiopia’s multiethnic, multilingual, and multicultural composition is enshrined in the nation’s constitution, which transforms diversity into a shared foundation for political and economic cooperation across the country.

The GCS noted that although Ethiopia has a long history of governance spanning thousands of years, its modern constitutional and democratic practices are relatively young.

Recent years, it said, have seen the government focus on consolidating democratic institutions, protecting human and constitutional rights, strengthening transparency and accountability, and establishing independent national institutions.

These measures, the GCS added, have helped create an environment that respects diversity while promoting justice, inclusivity, and good governance.

The agency highlighted that the holiday provides an opportunity for Ethiopians to celebrate their cultural heritage, traditions, identities, and aspirations, fostering mutual understanding and strengthening national cohesion.

It further noted that past celebrations have contributed to national initiatives, including mobilizing support for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), demonstrating how Ethiopia channels its diversity into collective achievement.

According to the GCS, Ethiopia’s recent experience illustrates that sustainable development and national prosperity are anchored in unity strengthened by diversity.

Recognition and accommodation of differences, the statement said, have become essential for realizing the country’s democratic and developmental goals, with consensus and constitutionalism serving as guiding principles.

This year’s celebration carries the theme “Democratic Consensus for National Unity”, reflecting the government’s emphasis on inclusive governance, civic engagement, and constitutional democracy as cornerstones of Ethiopia’s ongoing reform and development agenda.
