GERD Heralds New Era of Prosperity and National Resolve, Says Prime Minister Abiy

Addis Ababa, September 1, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has hailed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a transformative national catalyst, describing it as both a symbol of resilience and a legacy that will inspire generations to safeguard Ethiopia’s interests while engaging the world on the basis of mutual benefit.

In a discussion at Guba with his Social Affairs Advisor, Deacon Daniel Kibret, the Premier underscored that the GERD signifies “the end of the story of indigence” and reflects Ethiopia’s capacity to achieve rapid development within a short time.

He stressed that the dam not only addresses the long-standing narrative of the Abbay River flowing without a permanent home but also embodies unity, perseverance, and the ability of Ethiopians to turn vision into reality.

“Beyond power generation, the GERD will deliver far-reaching economic dividends, allowing Ethiopia to recover its investment in just a few years,” Abiy said. “If we work diligently and remain steadfast in our long-term vision, Ethiopia’s prosperity can be achieved in the shortest possible time.”

The Prime Minister urged citizens to protect the country’s resources for present and future generations, emphasizing that the GERD stands as a legacy to cultivate a generation committed to Ethiopia’s sovereignty and progress.

Congratulating the nation on what he called a historic milestone, Abiy invited Ethiopians to visit the dam, noting that it has left an indelible mark on the country’s modern history. He described the project as “a landmark national undertaking that has brought light to Ethiopians,” both literally and figuratively.

Reflecting on the dam’s challenging journey, Abiy recalled financial shortages, diplomatic pressures, the COVID-19 pandemic, and regional tensions. Yet, he stressed, these obstacles were overcome through the perseverance, unity, and collective contributions of the Ethiopian people.

“The GERD has not only ended a legacy of suffering and uncertainty, but it has also brought light,” he said, portraying it as a symbol of hope for millions who have endured poverty and hardship.

Abiy concluded that the dam represents the deeply rewarding outcome of generations of struggle and sacrifice, calling its completion “a great blessing for Ethiopia and the region.”
