German Embassy Funds New School Kitchen to Support Vulnerable Children in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, June 25, 2025 (FMC) — The German Embassy in Ethiopia announced the signing of a contract by Ambassador Jens Hanefeld, Federal Republic of Germany to Ethiopia and Permanent Observer to the African Union, to fund the construction of a new kitchen at the German Church School in Addis Ababa.
The new kitchen will provide nutritious meals to approximately 300 vulnerable children from the surrounding neighborhood, including those with disabilities.
The initiative aims to enhance the well-being and academic performance of the students, thereby supporting their future opportunities, the Embassy told Fana Media Corporation.
The German Church School, operated since 1972 by the German Evangelical Church (Evangelische Gemeinde Deutscher Sprache in Äthiopien), serves nearly 300 children, adolescents, and young adults from disadvantaged families in Addis Ababa.
The school embraces the principle of “Giving the poor a chance” and offers not only education from first grade through vocational training or university preparation but also crucial social and medical support via its dedicated social and health stations. This holistic approach supports both students and their families.
The school’s operational costs are fully funded through donations, with valuable contributions from organizations including Melkam Edil and the Christian Blind Mission (CBM).
