Ghanaian Vice President Calls for Democracy That Delivers “Food, Not Just Ballots”
Addis Ababa, August 13, 2025 (FMC) – Ghanaian Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Tuesday urged African countries to practice democracy to ensure the transformation of their countries and bring the needed rewards to their people.
Party delegates and government officials from 34 African countries are attending the African Political Parties Summit in Accra, including Sao Tome and Principe President Carlos Vila Nova and Vice President of Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party and Head of the Coordination Center for Democracy Building, with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister, Adem Farah.
Ghanaian Vice President, Opoku-Agyemang, said at the opening of the Summit that politics divorced from the well-being and transformation of the people is empty.
“Our people do not ask us to perform politics for its own sake. They deserve politics that translates into food security, decent jobs, functional schools, accessible health care, efficient infrastructure, security, and justice,” the vice president stressed.
Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the need to avoid divisive partisan politics because political power must not be achieved at the expense of the peace and cohesion of society, according to a report by Ghanaian online news platform News Ghana.
The summit is a collaboration between the Africa Governance Center, an Accra-based independent think tank committed to promoting governance excellence, policy development, and institutional capacity building to support Africa’s economic transformation, and the government of Ghana.
The three-day gathering, which opened Tuesday, focused on redefining political parties to drive regional integration and equitable development.
