Gifaataa, Wolaita New Year Festival, Added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Addis Ababa, December 10, 2025 (FMC) — Gifaataa, the New Year festival of the Wolaita people of South Ethiopia regional state, has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The decision was made during the ongoing 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, India.

Passed down through generations, Gifaataa marks the transition from the old year to the new and is widely celebrated among the Wolaita community. The festival is recognized for promoting peace, unity and social cohesion, engaging participants of all ages, genders, religions and social backgrounds.

The inscription coincides with Ethiopia’s celebration of the 20th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day, adding symbolic weight to the recognition.

Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa addressed the committee, underscoring the cultural value of Gifaataa and Ethiopia’s continued commitment to preserving its diverse heritage.
