Global Electric Vehicle Makers Intensify Interest in Ethiopia’s Emerging EV Market
Addis Ababa, July 13, 2025 (FMC) — International electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers and suppliers are intensifying their interest in Ethiopia’s fast-developing EV market, according to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.
The number of companies engaged in assembling and supplying electric vehicles in Ethiopia is growing steadily year after year, as the country positions itself as a future hub for green transport in Africa.
State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bareo Hassen, said sustained efforts are underway to promote electric mobility and attract increased investment into the sector.
He noted that Ethiopia has adopted a series of proactive measures aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and leveraging the country’s renewable energy potential to transform its transport and logistics sector.
As part of this broader strategy, the government is accelerating the implementation of the National Electric Vehicle Strategy to make the sector more investment-friendly.
Bareo also highlighted ongoing government-backed initiatives to convert fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives, along with the promotion of technologies that reduce fuel consumption and environmental pollution.
He pointed out that the government has introduced a range of incentives through supportive policies and strategies — measures that are already yielding positive outcomes.
According to the state minister, more than 115,000 electric vehicles are currently operating in Ethiopia, while over 15 companies are actively engaged in EV assembly, ENA reported.
Bareo concluded by noting that Ethiopia’s growing focus on sustainable transport is drawing increased attention from global electric vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, who now see long-term investment potential in the country’s emerging EV market.
