Government Reaffirms Uninterrupted Food Assistance to Displaced Residents in Tigray Shelters

Addis Ababa, December 25, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) has reaffirmed the government’s continued commitment to providing uninterrupted humanitarian food assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in temporary shelters, particularly in the North West Zone of the Tigray Region.

In a statement issued to FMC on Wednesday, the Commission dismissed claims circulating on social media that displaced residents are being left without support, describing the allegations as unfounded and inconsistent with the reality on the ground.

It stressed that IDPs housed at the Hitsats temporary shelter in Asgede Woreda are receiving complete and continuous humanitarian food assistance.

The Commission stated that food distribution activities have been carried out consistently throughout the year to ensure that displaced communities have access to essential supplies. It added that residents of the Hitsats shelter have benefited from regular food assistance from September through December 2025.

According to the Commission, a total of 14,413 displaced individuals received food aid at the Hitsats shelter in December alone. In September, 16,775 people, including displaced residents from nearby shelters, were assisted. The number increased to 18,290 in October and 17,813 in November, before declining to 14,413 in December.

Over the four-month period, the Commission reported that 11,406 quintals of food items — including wheat, sorghum, pulses, and cooking oil — were distributed to displaced populations. The total value of the humanitarian assistance provided exceeded 257 million Birr.

While acknowledging that challenges remain in the delivery of humanitarian aid under the region’s interim administration, the Commission underscored the federal government’s readiness to provide additional support whenever formally requested.

The statement further emphasized that ensuring the proper delivery of assistance to displaced communities is the responsibility of the regional interim administration and local authorities. It noted that any gaps in the distribution process should be promptly identified and addressed at the regional and local levels.
