Green Legacy program crucial to reviving Ethiopia’s economy, says House Speaker
Addis Ababa, June 29, 2025 (FMC) – The Green Legacy Program is proving vital to Ethiopia’s economic recovery and long-term development, as it is “closely aligned with the country’s broader development agenda,” said Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives.
Speaker Tagesse made the remarks during a tree-planting ceremony held this morning at the Gulele Riverside Project in Addis Ababa. The event was attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima, and senior federal and regional government officials.
Highlighting the far-reaching impact of the Green Legacy Initiative, the Speaker emphasized that environmental degradation and climate change are directly linked to economic performance. He noted that the program not only fosters ecological restoration but also boosts productivity—particularly in key sectors such as agriculture.
He pointed to improved coffee yields in recent years as a tangible example of how the initiative is enhancing economic outcomes since its launch, ENA reported.
Describing the Green Legacy as a “generational endeavor,” Tagesse called on all citizens to actively contribute to building a resilient and prosperous Ethiopia. He stressed that nationwide participation is essential to realizing the country’s development ambitions swiftly and sustainably.
The 2025 Green Legacy campaign was officially launched yesterday by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, joined by Vice President Shettima, members of the diplomatic community, and high-ranking Ethiopian officials.
This year’s initiative is being carried out under the theme “Renewal Through Planting” and sets a target of planting 7.5 billion tree seedlings, bringing the cumulative goal to 54 billion by next year.
