IGAD Congratulates Ethiopia on Hosting COP32, Pledges Support for Africa’s Climate Leadership

Addis Ababa, November 15, 2025 (FMC) — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has congratulated Ethiopia on its selection as the host of the 32nd Conference of the Parties (COP32) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

IGAD’s Executive Secretary welcomed the announcement as a major continental achievement, highlighting Ethiopia’s increasing role in shaping climate and development agendas in the region.

He said the country’s successful bid reflects its commitment to environmental restoration, resilience, and sustainable growth.

Ethiopia’s key initiatives, including the Green Legacy Initiative, which has mobilized millions in reforestation and ecosystem restoration, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a transformative project to expand clean energy access, were cited as examples of the country’s long-term vision for a greener and more prosperous future.

The regional bloc’s Executive Secretary emphasized that hosting COP32 offers an opportunity for the IGAD region to highlight challenges such as recurring droughts, climate-induced displacement, and mounting pressures on food and water systems.

He described the conference as a platform to advance solutions rooted in experience, innovation, and collective responsibility.

IGAD confirmed its readiness to collaborate with Ethiopia, the African Union, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and international partners to ensure COP32 is inclusive, impactful, and guided by African priorities.

The regional bloc also pledged support for efforts to strengthen climate finance access, deepen regional cooperation, and accelerate resilience-building initiatives.

“IGAD stands with Ethiopia in delivering a COP32 that showcases Africa’s ambition, elevates regional priorities, and strengthens global solidarity in confronting the climate crisis,” the Executive Secretary said.
