Irreecha Plays Key Role in Advancing Prosperity and National Unity: Culture and Sport Minister

Addis Ababa, October 3, 2025 (FMC) — Culture and Sport Minister Shewit Shanka has emphasized that Irreecha continues to play a vital role in strengthening Ethiopia’s prosperity and reinforcing its multinational unity.

The 7th Irreecha Forum was held at Hora Harsede Hall in Bishoftu under the theme “Irreecha for the Revival of the Country.” The event brought together Chief Whip Tesfaye Beljige, Oromia Regional State Chief Administrator Shimelis Abdisa, federal and regional officials, ministers, Aba Gedas, Hade Sinqes, and other distinguished guests.

In her keynote address, Minister Shewit highlighted Ethiopia’s richness in cultures, languages, and values. She underlined that Irreecha, along with the cultural practices of the country’s various nations, nationalities, and peoples, stands as a powerful expression of unity in diversity.

She noted that the government is committed to developing and promoting such cultural heritages as key tourism assets. Deeply rooted in the Geda system, Irreecha represents both the ancient traditions of the Oromo people and a festival that celebrates love, brotherhood, peace, and gratitude.

Oromia Regional State Chief Administrator Shimelis Abdisa, for his part, described Irreecha as a celebration of peace, gratitude, and solidarity. He stressed that major national development projects currently underway are laying a firm foundation for Ethiopia’s future prosperity.

He further explained that comprehensive efforts are being carried out across all sectors to ensure shared growth and progress, with the tourism industry — particularly cultural tourism — being promoted as a driver of development.

This year’s Irreecha festival will be marked on Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5, 2025, at Hora Finfinne in Addis Ababa and Hora Harsede in Bishoftu, respectively.
