Jigjiga’s 20km corridor project transforms urban landscape – PMO
Addis Ababa, October 2, 2025 (FMC) — The 20km corridor project in Jigjiga is transforming the city with granite walkways, upgraded utility lines, and a dedicated cycle lane that promotes healthy, sustainable living, according to the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
Nearly 5 hectares of green space with over 5,000 trees now improve air quality, while the main road has been expanded from four to six lanes with upgraded drainage to ease traffic and flooding.
Buildings are being modernized, new community spaces like a playground and park are underway, and over 35 surveillance cameras are being installed to enhance security and support smart city management, the PM Office said.
Following his tour of the regional capital Jigjiga yesterday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was chuffed by Jigjiga’s urban progress and emerging regional projects. It is also noteworthy that the Prime Minister, together with his high-level delegation, traveled to the Somali Region Wednesday.
“The Jigjiga we have seen today is markedly different from the one we visited just last January. Across the city, thousands of new housing units are being built to meet the pressing needs of citizens, while corridor development projects are visibly enhancing wellbeing in every area where they have begun,” PM Abiy said.
He added, “As we modernize our urban centers, we must remain mindful that we are not only building for today, but also laying the foundation for tomorrow. We must remember that our vision must be rooted in what is essential for us as Africans and Ethiopians.”
