Kenya battles deadly floods as death toll hits 62 amid continued rainfall
Nairobi, March 14, 2026 (FMC) — Heavy rains across Kenya have caused widespread flooding and landslides, leaving at least 62 people dead and prompting authorities to warn of continued rainfall and heightened flood risks.
The Kenya Meteorological Department said parts of the country could experience persistent heavy rain as the early phase of the long rains season continues, raising concerns over further displacement and property damage.
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration reported that Nairobi has recorded the largest number of fatalities, including 46 men, eight women, and eight children. Rescue teams remain active in flooded neighborhoods, working to locate and assist affected residents.
Other regions have also suffered losses: the Eastern region reported 17 deaths, the Rift Valley seven, Nyanza two, the coastal region two, and the Central region one. Flooded streets and submerged homes have disrupted transport and daily life in many areas.
Government agencies and emergency responders have been deployed to provide relief and support to displaced families. Authorities have urged residents living in flood-prone or low-lying areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
