Late Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris Laid to Rest in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, October 20, 2025 (FMC) – The funeral of the late Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris, former President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, was held today in Addis Ababa, attended by senior government officials, religious leaders, family, and friends.

Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris, a highly respected religious scholar, dedicated over five decades to teaching the Holy Quran and guiding Ethiopia’s Muslim community. During his lifetime in Addis Ababa, he taught the Quran in translation more than 300 times, leaving a profound and lasting impact on the spiritual and moral life of the nation.

From March 2018 to May 2022, he served as President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and supervised the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia, fostering dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among the country’s diverse faith communities.

The funeral reflected the deep respect and admiration Ethiopians held for the Grand Mufti, whose lifetime of scholarship, guidance, and service to both the Muslim community and the wider nation has left an enduring legacy.
