Mass Celebrations Sweep Oromia Region as Ethiopia Marks Historic GERD Inauguration

Addis Ababa, September 17, 2025 (FMC) – Tens of thousands of residents across Oromia Region have poured into the streets today to celebrate the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the country’s flagship development project.

The dam, first launched in 2011, was officially inaugurated on September 9, 2025, by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in a ceremony attended by several African leaders, the Prime Minister of Barbados, and other international dignitaries. The event marked what officials have described as a new chapter not only for Ethiopia but also for Africa’s development journey.

Standing on the Abbay River, the GERD is Africa’s largest hydroelectric power plant, capable of generating over 5,000 megawatts of electricity. The project represents Ethiopia’s determination to harness its own resources for development and energy security. From the beginning, its construction was uniquely financed through contributions from ordinary Ethiopians—via bond purchases, salary deductions, and donations—alongside national budget allocations. This collective effort made the GERD a symbol of both unity and self-reliance.

Since the inauguration, nationwide festivities have continued under the theme “We Did It in Unity.” The Oromia rallies—drawing Ethiopians from all walks of life—have become another vivid expression of popular pride in the country’s achievement.

Demonstrators carried banners and chanted slogans declaring the GERD as a “symbol of prosperity,” “a sign of Ethiopia’s potential,” and “a victory that will be repeated.” Messages emphasizing national unity, self-reliance, and pride in African identity echoed throughout the gatherings, with participants underscoring the dam as both a foundation for Ethiopia’s development and a source of continental inspiration.

The mass celebrations, highlighting solidarity with the government’s efforts to drive national progress, are expected to continue across the country until the end of the week.
