Addis Ababa Mayor Says New Cold Storage Facility to Cut Post-Harvest Losses and Strengthen Market Stability

Addis Ababa, January 27, 2026 (FMC) — Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie has underscored the role of modern cold-chain infrastructure in reducing post-harvest losses, stabilizing markets, and improving the quality and competitiveness of agricultural products, as she inaugurated a large-scale vegetable, fruit, and animal products cold storage facility in Akaki-Qaliti Sub-City.

The modern cold storage facility and multipurpose building, constructed by the Ethiopian Commercial Corporation, officially commenced operations following the inauguration ceremony attended by Mayor Adanech, Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Kassahun Gofe (PhD), Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime, and other senior officials.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Adanech stated that the facility—covering more than 11,400 square meters and described as the largest of its kind in the country—will significantly reduce waste and environmental pollution occurring after agricultural production.

She noted that the project will play a critical role in maintaining market stability by preserving the natural quality of vegetables, fruits, and animal products, ensuring their safe and timely supply to domestic consumers as well as export markets.

The Mayor further emphasized that the facility will enable consumers to access fresh agricultural products at fair and reasonable prices, while at the same time safeguarding farmers’ interests by shortening the market chain and improving efficiency.

Mayor Adanech reaffirmed the city administration’s commitment to strengthening support for similar initiatives, including the provision of necessary facilities, to ensure the successful implementation of projects that enhance the quality and competitiveness of agricultural products.

She also commended the leaders, technical experts, and institutions involved in the project, describing the facility as one of significant national importance that will contribute to boosting Ethiopia’s competitiveness in the agricultural sector.
