Mieso–Dire Dawa Expressway Key to Ethiopia’s Economic Growth and Regional Connectivity – Deputy PM

Addis Ababa, January 4, 2026 (FMC) – Road infrastructure is central to Ethiopia’s journey toward sustained economic growth, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said.

He made the remarks yesterday during in-depth discussions with project leaders on the progress of the Mieso–Dire Dawa Expressway. The discussions reviewed key areas of implementation, including workforce mobilization, the supply of machinery and plant, site preparation, and ongoing consultations with local communities.

Temesgen said that once completed, the Mieso–Dire Dawa Expressway will transform a previously treacherous route into a safe and efficient corridor for heavy transport. He added that the expressway will streamline import–export trade, reduce costs, and reinforce Ethiopia’s role as a vital hub for regional connectivity.

Highlighting the project’s strategic importance, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that it is essential for all stakeholders to work in close coordination to ensure timely completion. He said the expressway enhances national competitiveness and improves the livelihoods of citizens.

“Modern roads accelerate growth, save lives, and expand opportunity,” Temesgen said. “This expressway marks another decisive step in connecting Ethiopia—city to city, market to market, and opportunity to opportunity.”
