“Migrants’ Dignity Is Our Dignity”: Ethiopia Reiterates Inclusive Migration Policies
Addis Ababa, December 18, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia remains steadfast in strengthening its global role in safeguarding the rights, dignity, and safety of migrants, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said today on the occasion of International Migrants Day.
Speaking on the significance of the day, Deputy PM Temesgen highlighted the government’s recognition of individuals and institutions that have significantly advanced migration governance. These actors were honored as “Champions of Migration,” reflecting their transformative impact on the lives of migrants and on society at large.
He emphasized that, guided by a citizen-centered policy framework, the Ethiopian government prioritizes the dignified repatriation and sustainable reintegration of Ethiopian nationals facing hardship abroad. “We do not view migrants as sources of difficulty, but rather as agents of creativity, progress, and transformation—individuals whose contributions strengthen economies and deepen socio-cultural ties across the world,” he said.
Under Ethiopia’s Prosperity agenda, the country continues to host and support over one million refugees from different nations, providing protection and essential services. The Deputy PM noted that Ethiopia serves as a regional leader in implementing the Global Compact on Migration, reinforcing its commitment to humane migration policies.
Deputy PM Temesgen underscored that safeguarding the rights and dignity of migrants is not only a governmental responsibility but also a collective moral duty. He called for strengthened global cooperation to ensure that migration remains legal, safe, and humane for all.
“As a country of origin, transit, and destination, Ethiopia remains firmly committed to fostering an inclusive, humane, and compassionate world,” he said, urging the public to renew the shared commitment that migrants are part of our common humanity. “Their dignity is our dignity. Their future is our shared future.”
This year, the International Migrants Day was observed under the theme “My Great Story: Cultures and Development,” highlighting how human mobility drives growth, enriches societies, and helps communities connect, adapt, and support one another.
According to the UN, migration continues to shape economies, communities, and global development, with migrants playing critical roles in labor markets, innovation, entrepreneurship, and demographic stability.
It was indicated that well-managed migration strengthens resilience, fuels prosperity, and supports social cohesion, enabling migrants to find stability, support their families, and build new futures while helping communities adapt and thrive.
The UN and the International Organization for Migration called for smarter policies, stronger cooperation, and a renewed commitment to making migration work for everyone, emphasizing that each migrant’s journey is part of a shared story of resilience, cultural enrichment, and sustainable development.
