Multi-Purpose Public Service Infrastructure Projects Commissioned in Addis Ababa’s Lemi Kura Sub-City

Addis Ababa, December 28, 2025 (FMC) – A series of public service–oriented infrastructure projects have been officially commissioned in the Meri Loke area of Lemi Kura Sub-City, Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced on Sunday evening.

Speaking at the inauguration, the mayor said the newly completed facilities reflect the city administration’s continued efforts to make Addis Ababa more livable and inclusive for its residents.

She noted that the projects are designed to strengthen social cohesion while providing spaces suitable for sports, recreation, competitions, and children’s activities.

According to Mayor Adanech, the development spans a total area of 10.5 hectares and has added significant capacity to enhance the cleanliness, aesthetics, and functionality of the capital.

She described the project as a major contribution to improving urban public spaces and expanding access to community-based services.

The complex includes modern football fields for adults and children, as well as multi-purpose courts designed for basketball, tennis, and volleyball.

It also features landscaped green areas, a fountain and plaza decorated with natural stone, wide pedestrian walkways, and designated quiet reading spaces intended for residents seeking relaxation.

Facilities within the site further include an Early Childhood Development center equipped with play materials, modern cafeterias, public toilets, and a parking area capable of accommodating more than 400 vehicles. In line with the city’s push toward sustainable transport, electric vehicle charging infrastructure has also been installed.

The area is additionally adorned with artworks that enhance its visual appeal through paintings and color-themed designs.

Mayor Adanech stated that the land on which the project was built had previously been subject to 23 illegal land maps held by brokers.

She said the plots were recovered by the city administration and returned for public use, allowing the area to be developed for community benefit.

Local residents and youth were organized and engaged as primary stakeholders and beneficiaries of the project, with employment opportunities created during its implementation.

Concluding her remarks, the mayor reaffirmed the city administration’s commitment to transforming Addis Ababa through sustained action, emphasizing that ongoing urban development efforts would continue to translate policy commitments into tangible results for residents.
