National and Inter-Religious Councils Mourn the Passing of Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris
Addis Ababa, October 19, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia have expressed their condolences over the death of Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris, former President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council.
The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council described Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris as a prominent national figure and a unifying father to all, noting that he passed away after receiving medical treatment.
The Council further announced that his funeral will be conducted in a manner befitting the national and religious contributions he made throughout his life.
Similarly, the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia hailed the Grand Mufti as a national elder and a father who treated all Ethiopians equally, regardless of faith, ethnicity, or nationality. In its statement, the Council expressed condolences to his family, friends, and all Ethiopians, and recalled his lifelong guidance and advice to the nation, emphasizing his words: “Be human; personality comes first.”
The Council also highlighted the Grand Mufti’s dual role as the former President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and as the Guardian of the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia.
It requested that his funeral follow a special protocol in accordance with Islamic law and regulations, reflecting the services he provided to his country and people, and confirmed its readiness to coordinate the necessary arrangements with the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council.
