National Dialogue Process in Tigray Anticipated to Foster Inclusion, Accountability, and Consensus
Addis Ababa, January 20, 2026 (FMC) — The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) has collected public agendas and inputs from regional and federal stakeholders, as well as Ethiopians at home and abroad, as part of the ongoing national dialogue process, with the exception of the Tigray Regional State.
Recently, steps have been initiated to begin consultations in the Tigray region, marking a new phase in extending the national dialogue process to all parts of the country.
Given that Tigray experienced armed conflict in recent years, assessing the potential outcomes of the national consultation process for regional stakeholders is considered crucial. Such analysis is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the Commission’s work in the region and encourage meaningful participation and support from local stakeholders.
According to the Commission, the national dialogue process is anticipated to deliver several key benefits for stakeholders in Tigray and for Ethiopians at large.
First, the process is expected to provide an inclusive platform for political, social, and economic voices. While participating parties may hold differing views, their engagement in the dialogue is expected to create a conducive environment for articulating rights, concerns, and aspirations related to governance, social cohesion, and economic development. The participation of regional stakeholders will also help other Ethiopians gain a clearer understanding of the realities on the ground in Tigray and contribute jointly to the formulation of sustainable solutions.
Second, the dialogue process is expected to contribute to the establishment of accountability mechanisms for past violations. In light of the conflict experienced in the region, stakeholders from Tigray are expected to engage with other Ethiopians to support the development of accountability frameworks and the advancement of a victim-centered justice system. The Commission notes that such efforts could help prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies and support the search for common ground and national consensus.
Third, the inclusion of Tigray stakeholders in the national dialogue is expected to strengthen a shared sense of ownership over Ethiopia’s future. Ensuring the participation of the region’s stakeholders in decision-making processes, alongside citizens from other parts of the country, is expected to reinforce their role as equal contributors to national affairs.
The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission stated that inclusive participation across all regions is essential to ensuring that all Ethiopians are recognized as equal stakeholders in shaping the country’s future.
