National Museum of Ethiopia reopens following major renovation
Addis Ababa, May 22, 2025 (FMC) — The National Museum of Ethiopia officially reopened today following the completion of extensive renovation works aimed at preserving and enhancing one of the country’s most treasured cultural institutions.
The Director General of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, Abebaw Ayalew, stated that the museum, originally built in 1973, had been undergoing renovation since December 2024.
He told Fana Media Corporation that the project included the restoration and beautification of the museum’s premises, as well as the repair of long-standing drainage issues.
The renovation also focused on upgrading permanent exhibits, improving security measures, and refurbishing exhibition halls to meet modern standards.
According to Abebaw, the French government played a key role by providing financial, material, and technical support throughout the renovation process.
The museum will reopen its doors to the public on May 23, 2025.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa, alongside senior government officials, researchers, and invited guests.
