Nationwide tree planting drive underway as Ethiopia targets record-breaking 700 million seedlings today
Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s historic one-day tree planting campaign is in full swing, with citizens across the country mobilized to plant 700 million seedlings before sunset.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched the nationwide effort early this morning, calling on all Ethiopians to take part in this unprecedented push for environmental restoration.
Communities from all walks of life are participating in the record-setting initiative, which aims to plant the highest number of trees ever recorded in a single day.
The campaign is part of Ethiopia’s broader Green Legacy Initiative, a flagship program that underscores the country’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, climate action, and inclusive growth.
This year alone, Ethiopia targets the planting of over 7.5 billion seedlings, with 2.5 billion already planted ahead of today’s campaign.
The Green Legacy Initiative has so far seen more than 40 billion trees planted over the past six years — a reflection of the government’s sustained efforts to combat land degradation and build climate resilience.
In a statement issued earlier, the Office of the Prime Minister announced: “On July 31, 2025, Ethiopia will attempt to plant 700 million seedlings in one day. Let’s get ready as the countdown begins.”
With the campaign already underway, Ethiopians are once again demonstrating their collective commitment to building a greener, more sustainable future.
