Pakistan Hails Ethiopia as a Model for Food Security

Islamabad, October 3, 2025 (FMC) – Pakistan has praised Ethiopia for its achievements in food security, recognizing the country as a role model for other nations through its adoption of effective home-grown development programs.

The commendation came during a high-level meeting between Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Jemal Beker, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad informed FMC.

During the discussion, the two officials explored ways to boost bilateral cooperation in agriculture and livestock, laying the groundwork for future joint research aimed at increasing agricultural productivity in both countries.

Ambassador Jemal briefed the Federal Minister on Ethiopia’s comprehensive reforms and home-grown initiatives that have advanced food self-sufficiency, highlighting programs such as the Green Legacy and YeLemat Tirufat (Bounty of the Basket). He also noted Ethiopia’s progress in sustainable energy, where 98 percent of the country’s economy is powered by clean and green sources.

The Ambassador provided updates on major infrastructure projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the Ogaden Liquified Natural Gas Project, emphasizing their role in boosting energy production and supporting sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and ICT.

He added that Ethiopia has successfully mobilized its population through development strategies inspired by the Medemer philosophy, which emphasizes synergy among land, people, and the environment to achieve sustainable development goals. The country is looking to strengthen cooperation with Pakistan by sharing knowledge, skills, and technology to enhance production and productivity.

The Federal Minister highlighted the longstanding ties between the two nations and the potential for collaboration between two predominantly agrarian economies in addressing global food security challenges.

He praised Ethiopia’s economic growth, noting the success of its coffee exports, and expressed Pakistan’s interest in importing high-quality Ethiopian cotton to diversify agricultural imports and support its textile sector.
