Pakistani Minister Applauds Ethiopia’s Leadership in Global Climate Action
Addis Ababa, August 1, 2025 (FMC) — Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Musadik Malik, has hailed Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his visionary leadership and exemplary role in advancing the global climate agenda.
In a notable demonstration of international solidarity, Pakistan joined Ethiopia’s historic one-day tree-planting campaign—“Renewal Through Planting”—by participating in the effort to plant 700 million seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy.
To commemorate Pakistan’s contribution, a joint tree-planting ceremony and media briefing were held at the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad. The event drew wide participation from members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, parliamentarians, business leaders, religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and the media.
Federal Minister Musadik Malik attended as the chief guest, alongside Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary for Africa at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who served as the guest of honor.
Speaking at the event, Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan, Jemal Beker, described the Green Legacy Initiative—launched in 2019—as a transformative campaign aimed at restoring ecological balance, reducing carbon emissions and soil erosion, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable development in Ethiopia.
He emphasized that Pakistan’s engagement in the “Renewal Through Planting” campaign not only highlights its growing climate cooperation with Ethiopia but also sends a powerful message of shared responsibility in addressing global environmental challenges.
Ambassador Jemal also announced that a high-level delegation of Ethiopian officials and climate experts will soon visit Pakistan to participate in a series of “Green Dialogues” and joint planting campaigns aimed at strengthening bilateral collaboration on climate resilience.
In his remarks, Minister Musadik Malik commended the Ethiopian Ambassador for his outstanding efforts to promote green values and sustainable practices throughout Pakistan. He praised Ethiopia’s climate actions, including the Green Legacy and Yelemat Tirufat (“Bounty of the Basket”) initiatives, as inspiring models of environmental resilience and innovation.
He concluded by stressing the importance of learning from Ethiopia’s achievements and scaling such successful practices across the Global South.
