Pan-African Conference on Teacher Education to Open Tomorrow in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, September 30, 2025 (FMC) — The African Union will open the Pan-African Conference on Teacher Education (PACTED 2025) tomorrow in Addis Ababa, bringing together educators, policymakers, researchers, and development partners from across the continent.

The three-day gathering, which runs from October 1 to 3, will be held under the theme “Advancing Strategies for Teacher Training, Recognition, and Professional Development.”

The conference will also feature the African Union Continental Teachers Awards 2025, the launch of a continental Teacher Community of Practice platform, and the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day.

PACTED 2025 will mark the start of the AU’s Decade of Accelerated Action for the Transformation of Education and Skills Development (2025-2034), in line with the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 26–35), the Continental TVET Strategy (CTVET-34), and the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-34). Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening teacher education systems, advancing professional development, ensuring gender equity, retaining talent, and integrating digital and green skills into teaching.

Organized by the AU’s Department of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation with support from the European Union’s Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa, the conference is anticipated to produce harmonized teacher standards, promote collaboration among Member States, and renew commitments to investing in teachers as key drivers of Africa’s development.
