PM Abiy Ahmed launches one-day campaign to plant 700 million trees

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) officially launched Ethiopia’s annual one-day tree planting campaign this morning, with the country aiming to plant 700 million tree seedlings nationwide before the end of the day.

The Prime Minister marked the launch of the campaign in Jimma Zone, where he planted seedlings alongside First Lady Zinash Tayachew, Oromia Regional President Shimelis Abdisa, and other senior federal and regional officials.

The initiative is part of the government’s flagship Green Legacy Initiative, which seeks to promote environmental sustainability, restore degraded landscapes, and build climate resilience across the country.

Today’s target of 700 million seedlings forms a major component of Ethiopia’s goal to plant over 7.5 billion trees during the current planting season.
