PM Abiy Ahmed Receives Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Addis Ababa, January 8, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed received Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the National Palace in Addis Ababa today, the Office of the Prime Minister said.

Wang Yi is in Ethiopia for a two-day official visit, during which discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, regional issues, and areas of mutual interest.

The meeting underscores the continuing diplomatic engagement between Ethiopia and China, reflecting the longstanding partnership between the two countries.

During his visit, Wang Yi is also expected to meet senior government officials and hold consultations on enhancing cooperation in political, economic, and cultural sectors, as well as exploring opportunities to strengthen collaboration in the Horn of Africa and wider region. “the visit is expected to include discussions on bilateral relations and regional issues of mutual interest,” the PM Office noted.

The visit to Ethiopia forms part of Wang Yi’s weeklong tour of four African countries, including Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho, from January 7 to 12. He is scheduled to participate in the launch of the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, marking the celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between China and African nations.

Prior to Wang Yi’s arrival in Ethiopia, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the tour aims to deepen political mutual trust, follow up on outcomes from the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and strengthen the building of an all-weather China–Africa community with a shared future.
