PM Abiy appoints Mr. Sandokan Debebe as Chief Commissioner of Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission
Addis Ababa, October 14, 2025 (FMC) – The Office of the Prime Minister has confirmed that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed Mr. Sandokan Debebe as Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, effective October 14, 2025.
The appointment follows the Council of Ministers’ approval earlier today of the regulation establishing the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, which will oversee and coordinate Ethiopia’s development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Commissioner of the country’s Nuclear Energy Commission, Mr. Sandokan has been serving as Chief of Staff of the Office of the Prime Minister with rank of State Minister
The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission is tasked with applying nuclear energy in critical sectors, including electricity generation, industrial development, food security, healthcare, and scientific research, in accordance with international standards and frameworks.
The regulation establishing the Commission will take effect upon its publication in the Negarit Gazette.
