PM Abiy: Arjo Didessa Irrigation Project Nears Completion, Set to Boost National Food Security

Addis Ababa, February 18, 2026 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said the Arjo Didessa Irrigation Project in Oromia region is nearing completion and will boost national food security, highlighting its steady progress during his visit to western Oromia on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister traveled to western parts of Oromia regional state of Ethiopia as part of his ongoing tour of the region’s development projects today, reviewing key agricultural and infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting national development.

At the Arjo Didessa site, the Prime Minister assessed the ongoing work and described the project as “an ambitious initiative” advancing steadily toward completion.

According to PM Abiy, once fully operational, the irrigation project will support the cultivation of multiple crops and directly contribute to Ethiopia’s national food security efforts, benefiting thousands of households.

“I am confident that, with sustained effort, this project will deliver on its promise and uplift the surrounding communities,” the Prime Minister added in a statement shared on his social media page.

The Arjo Didessa Irrigation Project is part of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to expand irrigated farming, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen livelihoods in rural areas. By improving access to reliable water resources, the project is expected to transform local farming practices and contribute to long-term food security for the nation.
