PM Abiy Attends Pre-G20 African Leaders’ Meeting in Johannesburg
Addis Ababa, November 21, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attended a meeting of African heads of state and government, the African Union, and other African partners in Johannesburg ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, his Office confirmed this evening.
The session was hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Prime Minister Abiy is in South Africa for the G20 Summit accompanied by a high-level Ethiopian delegation.
The pre-summit gathering formed part of Africa’s coordinated consultations before the Leaders’ Summit.
South Africa is hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit on 22–23 November 2025 in Johannesburg, marking the first time the summit is held on the African continent.
The summit is being held under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability” and follows South Africa’s assumption of the G20 Presidency in December 2024.
According to official information, the host country has conducted more than 130 working-group meetings and 23 ministerial-level engagements in preparation for the event, with agendas centred on development financing, debt sustainability, climate transitions and equitable global growth.
A G20 Social Summit, held from 18–20 November 2025 in Ekurhuleni, convened civil society groups including youth, women, persons with disabilities and faith-based organisations as part of South Africa’s effort to broaden participation in global governance.
