PM Abiy challenges local, int’l visitors to conquer Hambaricho’s legendary 777 steps

Addis Ababa, June 7, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on citizens and international tourists alike to visit the Hambaricho Mountains and take on the challenge of climbing its legendary 777 hand-carved steps, highlighting the site’s historical and natural significance.

During his recent visit to the area in Central Ethiopia, the Prime Minister launched the construction of model rural villages under his flagship Rural Corridor Development initiative. The visit also included a personal ascent of the famed stairs of Hambaricho, a feat he used to inspire broader engagement with Ethiopia’s unique landscapes.

“Situated in the Central Ethiopia region, this mountain range offers stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and significant historical value,” the Prime Minister said after reaching the summit. “Hambaricho Mountain and its surrounding ranges served as the administrative centre and seat of successive Kambata kings from the 16th century until the late 19th century.”

He emphasized that beyond its physical beauty, Hambaricho is a site of deep cultural heritage and historical depth, making it an ideal destination for both domestic and international visitors.

Prime Minister Abiy’s climb of the 777 steps served not only as a symbolic gesture but also as a call to action: “I encourage citizens and visitors from around the world to experience the breathtaking beauty of Hambaricho and to take on the challenge of climbing its iconic stairs.”
