PM Abiy Highlights Africa’s Climate Leadership at Second African Climate Summit
Addis Ababa, September 8, 2025 (FMC) — This morning, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed opened the Second African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, emphasizing Africa’s role as a continent of climate solutions rather than a victim of the climate crisis.
He highlighted Ethiopia’s flagship initiatives as examples of sustainable development, including the Green Legacy tree-planting campaign, climate-smart agriculture programs, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). These projects demonstrate the country’s commitment to environmental restoration, food security, and renewable energy.
The Prime Minister called for a shift from climate aid to climate investment and proposed an African Climate Innovation Compact, designed to deliver 1,000 African-led solutions by 2030. He stressed Africa’s potential to lead globally in renewable energy, food security, and ecosystem restoration.
In addition, Abiy announced Ethiopia’s candidacy to host COP32 in 2027, positioning the nation and the continent as leaders in global climate action.
The summit convenes African policymakers, scientists, and civil society leaders to discuss strategies for climate resilience, sustainable development, and regional cooperation.
