PM Abiy Hosts Official Welcoming Ceremony for Singaporean Premier Lawrence Wong

Addis Ababa, November 24, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today hosted an official welcoming ceremony for Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the National Palace here in Addis Ababa, marking a significant step forward in the growing partnership between Ethiopia and Singapore.

In a message shared on his social media platforms after the ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy described the Singaporean Premier’s visit to Ethiopia as “an important milestone” in the relationship between the two nations.

He noted that the expanding cooperation between Ethiopia and Singapore reflects a shared commitment to progress in key sectors vital to their common future.

As part of the official program, the two countries signed two Memoranda of Understanding—one on skills development and another on carbon credits collaboration.

According to Prime Minister Abiy, the agreements demonstrate the “joint commitment to building resilient, future-ready workforces and advancing sustainable, low-carbon growth.”

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that Ethiopia highly values its partnership with Singapore and sees substantial potential for deepening cooperation.

He highlighted opportunities for further practical collaboration, including expanding trade and investment, strengthening smart transport and logistics systems, and enhancing work in digital infrastructure, fintech, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

Images shared on Prime Minister Abiy’s social media platforms show the two leaders touring riverside and corridor development projects in the capital, planting tree seedlings, holding bilateral meetings, overseeing MoU signings, and delivering a joint media briefing.

It is to be recalled that Prime Minister Wong arrived in Addis Ababa on Sunday evening for an official working visit. He was received at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who returned earlier that day from the G20 Leaders’ Summit 2025 in Johannesburg.

It is also noteworthy that Prime Minister Abiy visited Singapore in June 2024, during which the two countries consolidated their ties across multiple sectors.

Ethiopia and Singapore established official diplomatic relations on March 31, 1969.

Despite being nearly 7,000 kilometers apart and differing significantly in size, Ethiopia and Singapore share deep common bonds, including their multicultural societies and roles as regional hubs in Africa and Southeast Asia.
