Addis Ababa, April 4, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated a state-of-the-art research complex, describing it as a major milestone in advancing Ethiopia’s scientific ecosystem and broader continental ambitions.
The newly inaugurated facility, built within the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), is designed to serve not only as critical infrastructure but also as a center of excellence aimed at supporting a self-sustaining and healthier future for the country, the Prime Minister said in a pist on his social media pages.
According to the Prime Minister, the complex houses 40 laboratories alongside advanced genomics and bioinformatics platforms. It also includes a bioequivalence center that will play a key role in certifying the quality and efficacy of medicines produced domestically.
He noted that the facility will contribute to strengthening health emergency preparedness and response systems, while enabling the translation of research into policy and innovation into practical solutions.
The Prime Minister further emphasized that the center represents a significant step toward achieving self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical production and ensuring sustainable health security. He added that the initiative builds on ongoing progress toward national independence across key sectors.
