PM Abiy launches pilot project to establish model rural village in Hadiya zone

Addis Ababa, June 3, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) launches a pilot project to establish model rural village in in Dubancho Kebele, Lemo Woreda, Hadiya Zone, in the Central Ethiopia Region.

After launching the project, PM Abiy said goodwill development projects initiated in the city are being implemented as part of the Rural Corridor Development initiative.

The construction of these demonstration villages is expected to improve farmers’ quality of life while supporting their continued engagement in agriculture, he asserted.

It is worth noting that the Prime Minister has launched similar projects in various rural areas of the Central Ethiopia region since June 2.

Since 2018, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has launched annual housing development projects during Ethiopia’s rainy season as part of broader nationwide volunteer efforts. Following the successful transformation of the Aware area through his urban housing initiative, the Prime Minister has now expanded the program to rural areas under the newly introduced Rural Corridors Initiative, officially marking the start of this year’s volunteer activities.

With his direct support, four zones in the Central Ethiopia region—Halaba, Kembata, Hadiya, and Silte—will see the construction of model rural corridor homes. These homes are intended to serve as templates for improving living standards in rural communities across the country.

Designed to be both cost-effective and culturally grounded, the homes strike a balance between modernity and tradition. Key features include harmony with the natural surroundings, the use of sustainable and affordable materials, and off-grid capabilities. The design also integrates water storage facilities, separate animal shelters for households with livestock, and biogas production systems. Additionally, vegetable gardens support food self-sufficiency, while perimeter fencing made from sustainable materials enhances both security and environmental responsibility.
